Common sense ruled at Kirklington Road... the pitch may have been covered in snow, but there was no frost at kick off time, and thanks to great work by the home club, this 3rd round Notts F.A. Senior Cup tie went ahead.
We had travelled to Forest Town to see them entertain Boots Athletic in the same competition, but as we pulled into the car-park the floodlights went off -- this left us 3 minutes to get to Rainworth - with the Stig driving we may have had a chance, but my driving is a little more sedate than the Top Gear icon! When we eventually arrived at Kirklington Road, for the first time that I can remember there was nowhere near the ground to park. Ended up over 100 yards down the road, but at least we were facing the right way for a quick getaway.
Got into the ground with just 7 minutes played - but also just in time to see Teversal take the lead. A looping header from the diminutive KYLE GEE-PEMBERTON was snatched at by Wrens keeper Mark Hales, and the ball squirted through the embarrassed stoppers arms into the back of the net.
Teversal may be struggling in the NCEL 1st Divison, but they gave NCEL Premier Division Rainworth a good workout, and were the better team by far in the first period. H-T 1-0
Into the clubhouse for a coffee at the break - this used to be a bit of a trial, but it has to be said that on this occasion the coffee was great...... as was the company - Steve R in attendance with friends - gets everywhere does Steve!!
Teversal began the second half still giving the home team problems, and it wasn't until the 74th minute that Rainworth levelled the scores. From a Tevie corner the ball was hooked down field and somehow reached MASSIAH McDONALD who ran at Danny Herring in the Tevie goal before slotting the ball past him. The irony was that left back Dave Cockerill had taken the Tevie corner, and the space he had vacated gave McDonald the chance......
4 minutes later the comeback was complete when JERMAIN HOLLIS placed the ball past Herring after the Tevie defence failed to clear properly. The last few minutes were nail-biters ,,,, not because of nerves particularly, but because the visitors were applying pressure and the last thing we need was extra time on a cold night like this!! Finished 2-1 .. Teversal were, on balance of play, the better team on the night, but two lapses of concentration cost them a place in the 1/4 finals....
