I went to Eagle Valley on my own - Kev had taken his grand-kids to the seaside. He wants to thank himself lucky he missed this one. The windy conditions did the players no favours, but at this level you'd think that the more experienced players would have coped better than they did. Mind you, I struggled to keep my hat on - and one one occasion had to retrieve it from under the stand!!
Got to the ground with 10 minutes to spare, but spent 5 of them trying to find somewhere to park. The car park is big at the Eagle Valley, but with three of the outer pitches in use, parking spaces were at a premium. I ended up parking near the road, but at least I was able to make a very swift exit and was back home by ten minutes past five.
Last time we went to Arnold, former Forest favourite Nigel Jemson was playing in the purple kit of the home team - this time he was in the all white of Rainworth.
"Jemmo" is now 40 years old ....and to be perfectly frank, he plays like a 40 year old ... no pace, not much enthusiasm and not a deal left in the tank. A bit harsh? Maybe, but he was on the pitch for 75 minutes and did little or nothing, much to the annoyance of some of the Wrens' fans who were wondering why the very lively, much younger Julian Topliss was on the bench....
The game started slowly, and only occasionally spluttered into life. After 10 minutes Arnold front man Tony Law ran at Rainworth keeper Mark Hales, but the giant stopper got down well to block. The Arnold striker then ran into the box from the right and was tripped by Matt Draper - penalty. After picking himself up, TONY LAW calmly fired the spot kick past Hales to give the home team the lead.
It took Rainworth until the 30th minute to draw level. After a hopeful punt upfield and a flick on by McDonald that the home defence failed to intercept, the ball fell kindly to ANT LYMAN who ran at Lee Broster in the Arnold net and he made no mistake firing under the keeper. H-T 1-1
The second period was very stale until Julian Topliss entered the field. The Rainworth sub almost scored within seconds of coming on - cutting inside and unleashing a curler that Broster did well to save. He then forced an error that gave Lynam a shooting chance. Broster was again up to the challenge and for a big lad, he got down well to push the ball away.
He could do nothing about the winner though. With the clock on 90+2, Lynam's ball into the box was only partially cleared. It fell straight to right back CAMERON FEARON lurking 20 yards out - he lashed it into the top corner to the delight of the travelling few, and the chagrin of the home faithful.
The ball was hit so sweetly into the top corner, that although Broster got a slight touch, he was never going to keep it out. Much too good a goal for this game - it really didn't deserve a finish like that!! F-T 1-2
