Surprising how many games were off..... a bit of frost nowadays is enough to frighten the match referees " I have to think of the players' safety" etc etc....
Well, when I were a lad, we played even if the pitch was frozzen over-- and the ball was a proper one, not a balloon ... and boots were made out of rock hard leather with wood studs......and shin pads were the Daily Mirror.......and keepers didn't have gloves.......
Come on refs.... games aren't called off very often in summer if the grounds are too hard due to drought, are they???......bloody nanny state!!

Saturday 30th January -- interesting afternoon.......

.......our game of choice was Hucknall Tn v Worksop Tn, but I received a text message from Yellows' boss Danny Bryant at 1:30pm telling me the game had been called off. Plan B - our original game was to have been Kimberley Tn v Harworth CI - so I called the Town Chairman Graeme Critchley at about 2:00pm and was informed the game was on at that moment in time. So, at 2:35pm, off we went to the Stag ground.
As soon as we arrived we knew the game was off - no cars in the car-park gave us a big clue!!! Kev drove into the ground and we were greeted by Mr. Critchley who informed us that the game had been called off at 2:30pm. He gave me a programme anway!!
No plan C - so we were undecided what to do, and Kev was smarting from the Florists losing at Pride Park....could we get to watch Arnold in time?? After a few minutes of indecision, Kev had a moment of inspiration. Hucknall Rolls v Bilborough Pelican 2nd half. Why not? -- it's free and saves writing off the whole afternoon.
Great call by Mr. Goodman, because although advertised as a 2pm kick off, the game hadn't actually kicked off until 2:30pm, so we managed to catch the back end of the first half. Bonus no. 1!
Bonus no. 2... Hucknall Rolls Reserves were playing Bulwell Reserves, so we ended up with two games to watch....
Bonus no. 3 ... ace freelance photographer Dan Westwell was still present at the game ( he was due to do 1/2 of the Rolls game and then move up the road to see the Hucknall v Worksop game). I have known Dan for a long time (we used to travel on the supporters coach to Mansfield Town away games years ago), but have never had the chance to spend any quality time in his company....had a great chat about this and that, and it has to be said, the hour or so flew by.... the games weren't bad either.
Hucknall Rolls Leisure 3-2 Bilborough Pelican -- Notts Senior League Senior Division.
Arrived with score at 1-1, and after a very nice cup of coffee, we were treated to three more goals.
Firstly Rolls went ahead when their 10 shirt ran at goal unchallenged and slotted past the visiting keeper. It was 2-2 soon after when Pelican's no. 10 tapped home from close range after being left alone in the 6 yard box. Less than a minute later Rolls went ahead again - this time the 9 jacket tapping in at the far post after a wayward shot from the left somehow found it's way to him....
Hucknall Rolls Leisure Res 2-2 Bulwell Res - NSL Division 2.
It was also 1-1 on the other pitch when we arrived with 8 minutes of the second half gone, then Bulwell went in front. It took a great own goal from Bulwell to get Rolls level - the game ending up at 2-2..

So - we missed our scheduled games, but still got over 90 minutes of football in!!

Saturday 30th January -- local games

Our game of choice is the UniBond Premier Division encounter between Hucknall Town and Worksop Town. Worksop played their home games at Hucknall last season, so should feel quite at home.

Hucknall have just parted company with Manager Bryan Chambers - and the Yellows have appointed our good friend Danny Bryant as Manager until the end of the season.

Also - we will be able to catch up with ace Evening Post photographer Daniel Westwell........used to Daniel "snapping" us at Field Mill - should be interesting to see how he works at this lower level.

South Normanton Ath 1-3 Kimberley Town

Tuesday 26th January 2010 -- CML Floodlit Cup 2nd round

Cold night at the Exchem Ground, but although the football wasn't of a very high standard, the company and banter were well worth the £3 entrance fee.

Had a right old natter with CML's Rob Hornby - and it's always a pleasure to spend time with "Wanderer" Richard Lane.

Kev's workmate Phil Mumby was also in attendance with friends -- likes a drink does Phil, and South Normanton's bar is very nice indeed!

Kimberley took the lead on 15 when their no. 6 jacket hammered the ball across the keeper after latching onto a neat ball into the box. Normo levelled soon after, a delightful lob from the edge of the box defeating the KImberley keeper. Sorry if details are a bit vague, but I didn't know any of the players, and the banter was more interesting than the game....H-T 1-1

What I do know is that the second Kimberley goal just after the break was a beauty... a cracking volley from just outside the area from their no. 7 shirt giving the home keeper no chance. Normo looked to have levelled soon after when the ball was headed home, but they were thwarted by an offside flag. Kimberley's no. 11 added their third, but Normo never gave up. The home no. 9 was guilty of the "On The Road's" miss of the season, when he skied the ball over from 3 yards out after being found by a great cross from the right. F-T 1-3

Mansfield Town 4-0 Chester City

Saturday 23rd January 2010 -- Blue Square Premier

This took us back to September/October when the Stags were playing well and scoring freely.....the strange thing is that the majority of players in the team v Chester were at Field Mill and in that team early in the season - while some of the newer signings were on the bench, leaving one to wonder why David Holdsworth keeps bringing in new faces when the old ones are quite capable of doing their jobs. Welcome return at left back for Craig Armstrong who combined really well with left wing maestro Ryan Williams .....great to watch.

Luke Foster looked calm and collected on debut alongside Luke Jones in the centre of the defence, while Jake Speight has surely at last given manager David Holdsworth no choice other than to recognise what a player he is, and has maybe earned the right to start every game.

The first 20 minutes were all played in the Chester half, and the constant pressure paid off when a superb corner from the left was nodded home at the near post by LUKE JONES. Just as Kev was praising the visiting defence, they failed to pick up Jones leaving him on his own - he made no mistake from close range.

JONES scored the second Stags goal in the 33rd minute - this time a well placed header from a Williams corner from the right. Two minutes later it was 3-0. Another Williams corner from the right was headed by Luke Foster straight at Chester keeper John Danby, but his parry fell to JAKE SPEIGHT who rifled the ball into the net. H-T 3-0

Constant pressure in the second half, but the home team only managed one more goal, SPEIGHT again firing past Danby after he was played in by strike partner Kyle Perry. F-T 4-0

Long Eaton United 2-3 New Mills -- Derbyshire Senior Cup 1/4 final

When you hear the phrase " a game of two halves", you usually groan and say "stop with the cliches!!!!" - but this really was a classic "game of two halves".

United 2-0 up at half-time and cruising - New Mills going on to win 3-2 with the help of some very naive play by the home team. Somehow the visiting no. 8 was allowed to control the second half from his midfield berth, and it seemed that the United management and players all failed to realise this .... and paid dearly - a plum semi-final tie at Matlock Town going down the toilet.

Kev was at the wheel again - and we arrived with 10 minutes to spare and headed for the "Big Jim Stand". This offered a great view of the game and also offered decent shelter from the biting wind. Great company again - Aggedor and friends on this occasion keeping us entertained throughout the game...

New Mills play their trade in the North West Counties League, and are based in the High Peak area of Derbyshire. Currently lying third in the division, having lost only 2 of their 19 league played so far this season. Long Eaton play in the NCEL and are currently comfortably mid-table.

The home team went ahead on 15. A KEVIN MABON free-kick from the left arcing over the flapping arms of the Millers keeper. New Mills offered little or nothing in reply, and the Blues looked like they would stroll into the semi-final. MABON added his and United's second on 42, this time the striker firing a fabulous 25 yarder from the left corner of the box into the back of the net - again the keeper losing his position and getting nowhere near the ball as it flew past him. H-T 2-0

Nice cup of coffee at the break, but a bit steep at £1 a cup.....still it went down well and was most welcome on a really cold evening.

Second half - what a transformation! Both teams playing a completely different game - Millers pressing hard with United dropping back inviting them on......and on the hour the visitors were rewarded for their enterprising play when their no. 9 GARRY KHARAS stabbed home the loose ball from close range after the home defence failed to make a decent clearance.

Nine minutes later the scores were level. No. 10 TOMMY TURNER tried his luck from the edge of the area and was more amazed than anyone when the Long Eaton keeper allowed the ball to run under his body and into the back of the net. The Millers 5 shirt did run across the keeper as the ball was fired at him, but this was a poor attempt at a save. So scores level, and Kev predicted that the visitors would win 3-2..... a prediction that proved correct - the winning goal headed home by KHARAS after a free kick from the left found him unmarked a few yards from goal. Long Eaton offered little or nothing second half, and although the Millers were lucky with the second goal, on the balance of play they deserved the victory. F-T 2-3

Grabbed a few words with good friend and Long Eaton player Kelvin " Mushy" Mushambi after the final whistle ... he was disappointed to have lost after cruising the first half, but still managed to flash us that dazzling smile we know so well!!!! He must have seen the programme "pen-pic" -- YOUNG player!!! Well, I suppose he is - compared to me!!!!

Hucknall Town 5-2 Burscough

Woo hoo !!!!!!! Not only did we get to a non-league game, we chose a cracker!

Before I go into the match details, I think the Hucknall Town groundsman Steve West deserves a mention for ensuring this game went ahead. Mid-week there was a 3" covering of snow on the Watnall Road pitch, and although this thawed after the temperature rose a couple of degrees, the melt-water along with the heavy rain, overnight and all through the morning, could have meant this game was called off - but on arrival at the ground, the pitch looked superb. Great effort by Steve and his team.

Met up with Steve Reading inside the ground, he was kind enough to let me have his team sheet, and we noticed immediately that Hucknall had two players on debut, Lee Stevenson at right back and Daniel O'Donnell on the left wing. Lee was at the Eastwood Academy before making his way to Heanor Town, while Daniel was with Yellows' Assistant Manager Danny Bryant at Sutton Town AFC. We also noticed that Dave Boafo was on the home bench. The last time we saw Dave he was playing for Greenwood Meadows against Radford in December.

Teams: Town; Haysted, Stevenson, Smedley, Meikle, Shiels, Hawes, Walters ( Boafo), Wilson L (C), Nightingale, Bonnick (Morley R), O'Donnell ( Wiggins-Thomas). Subs not used - Kelly, McCormick.

Burscough; Clancy, Taylor, Standley, Field, Bayliss, Grisdale, Parry, Roberts (C), Byers, Black, Brookfield. Subs - Wilson D, McEvatt, Asgari, Bathurst, Morley D.

Took up our position between the dugouts - gave us a chance to say hello to the home management team, Danny Bryant, Pablo Grossett and Bryan Chambers.

Burscough are struggling a little this season, and after just 15 seconds they looked like they may struggle in this game, going a goal down after TJ NIGHTINGALE collected the ball from Smedley before running into the box and slotting across keeper Kyle Clancy, the ball going in off the upright.

Town looked comfortable on the ball throughout the half, even though the visitors showed a very physical side to their game on occasion. The home domination meant nothing though on 43, when a defensive lapse allowed LEWIS FIELD to latch onto the ball and fire home from about 12 yards out. H-T 1-1

One problem Steve and Kev noticed was the Town strikers lack of work rate - we all know defending starts from the front, but Nightingale and Bonnick seemed content to let Burscough play through them instantly placing pressure on the midfield. Bonnick had a poor first half, but what a difference a cup of tea makes! He came out after the break looking a different player, his work rate now a feature of the game.

The home team regained the lead just 100 seconds into the second period. Walters was clattered into and from the resultant Laurie Wilson free-kick, defender ADRIAN HAWES rose like a salmon to head powerfully home.

The lead didn't last long though, Burscough striker DARREN BYERS allowed to run through the entire home defence before prodding home on 51. Poor defending it may have been, but it was a great controlled run and finish from the visiting no. 9.

6 minutes later, the home team took the lead again, this time an error from Clancy allowing the ball to run loose to ANTWON BONNICK who fired home from close range. This seemed to take any desire to win out of the Burscough team, they resorted to hacking the Hucknall players down rather than try to grab another equaliser.

The revitalised Bonnick set up Town's fourth. He made a speedy run down the right, fired a low driven ball across the goal to the far post where REUBEN WIGGINS-THOMAS was on hand to tap in. TJ HIGHTINGALE added the Hucknall fifth in the third minute of stoppage time - contolling well at the edge of the box before curling the ball past Clancy. Boafo almost added a sixth straight after, but his terrific volley crashed against the post with Clancy well beaten. F-T 5-2

Great game, although some of Burscough's challenges left a lot to be desired. Plus we had a very nit-picking lino near us.....no idea whether he was Mr. Davies or Mr. Styles - but Steve renamed him Mr. P. Dantic - and was he ever!!

Admission - Complimentary ( thanks Danny)

Seems unlikely as we have just had another light snowfall in Nottingham and with temperatures not set to rise much above freezing in the next couple of days, the chances of getting to a local game seem slight.
